A brief description to the subjects on offer

Please note that suggestion about progression routes depend on other link subjects and it would be advisable that you speak to admission tutors rather than base your decisions solely on suggestions made in this prospectus.

AS/A level subjects

AS and A levels are re-energised!  First teaching of the newly devised syllabuses is being launched for teaching from September 2008.  Great timing for the LEA 6th Form!  General Certificates in Education (GCE), commonly known as A levels, are divided into AS and A2 levels. AS exams are typically taken at the end of the first year of advanced study and lead to qualifications in their own right. However, AS qualifications also form the first half of a full A level qualification.

AS and A Level qualifications are assessed through a combination of external examination and/or coursework. Some subjects are studied and assessed in modules. Awards are given on an A – E grading scale and students failing to meet the minimum standard for an award will be recorded as ‘unclassified’.

We will be offering 24 AS level courses and most of the core subjects will be offered at the London Muslim Centre site.  What follows is the description of a cross section of the courses on offer…

AS Level Economics & Business

Students are encouraged to develop a critical understanding of businesses, the context in which they operate, the markets they serve and the process of adding value through a problem solving approach to study.  In the first year, students will study the nature of business and how they are classified; study their objectives and their various influences.  In addition, students are exposed to different functional areas of a business including Marketing, Accounting and Finance, People and Organisation and the Principles of Operations Management.  In the second year students get to specialise in one of the functional areas and study Strategic Management.

There is no specific entry requirement for this subject.  You can progress onto higher studies at university to do a degree in Law, Management, Accounting, Economics or other similar subjects.

AS Mathematics

Do you want to develop your understanding of mathematics and mathematical processes in a way that promotes confidence and fosters enjoyment?  Do you want to develop abilities to reason logically and recognise incorrect reasoning, to generalise and to construct mathematical proofs?  Do you also want to extend your range of mathematical skills and techniques and use them in more difficult, unstructured problems? And develop much more…Then study mathematics.

Students take C1 and C2 at AS level followed by C3 and C4 at A level.  Students unravel the magic of mathematics with the study of Algebra and functions, geometry in the plane, sequences and series, differentiation and integration in the AS level while in the A level study trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms and numerical methods.

You are expected to have covered all the material in the GCSE Mathematics Intermediate Tier.  You can progress onto higher studies in Science and Mathematics related subjects at universities such as Economics, Accounting, Medicine, Pharmacy and other similar degrees.

AS Arabic

Arabic is a language full of life and with world of opportunities.  For Muslims, it is the most important language because it is the language of the Qur’an and the Prophets SAW.  If you enjoy learning about other cultures and ways of life, then this modern foreign language course could be suitable for you.  Whether you want to use language for furthering your practice of Islam, to understand Qur’an and Hadith directly from the source, work, for further study, training, or for leisure, this course will equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge.

The course will help you to develop your general study skills, but most of all you will learn to communicate at a higher level.  You will also learn much more about a wide range of aspects of the societies in which the language is spoken. You will be able to read, understand and extract information from written passages in Arabic taken from authentic sources, such as magazines and newspapers, reports or books.  You will learn how to write essays or longer pieces in Arabic, will also learn all the appropriate grammar, words and phrases.

You are expected to have knowledge of Arabic to at least GCSE level.  You can progress onto higher studies in Arabic both in the UK and in one of the link universities abroad.  Combine it with English, Geography, ICT, Business studies or RS and you could do a degree in Arabic, Islamic studies, middle-eastern studies, cultural studies, media and most other Arts and language related subjects.

AS Geography

Have you ever wondered about the cyclones, floods and all the other natural disasters that are taking place around the globe?  What are the causes?  If you choose to study this subject you will find answers to these and many other questions.  You will attempt to study the forces that influence our natural environment – landscapes, ecosystems, weather and climate.  You will try to make sense of the economic forces that drive the world’s economy and how they are changing.  You will look at what decisions are being made and who makes them about the use and management of resources.  You will look at how we are affecting the environment we live in and what the opportunities, challenges and the constraints are.  You will find that a lot of Qur’anic verses come alive through your closer look at some of the issues related to nature.

There is no specific entry requirement for this subject.  Geography combines well with most other AS subjects and if you take it with Sciences could do engineering, psychology, environmental sciences, oceanography, geology and medicine.  If combined with English, Business studies or ICT then you can progress onto study business, management, law, media, accountancy, politics and philosophy.

AS Biology

This is an exciting and intellectually challenging subject.  You are given an opportunity to develop what you were introduced to in GCSE course.  The course emphasises on the relationships between structures and function that will enable you to understand how and why things happen.  Did you ever wonder how nerve cells transmit information, what makes the heart beat and how genes code for proteins?  Answers to these and many other questions will be explored through the study of AS Biology and you will never cease to be amazed!  The Creator and the Creations…closer reflections made easy with the study of this subject!

To study this subject you are expected to have at least a grade B in GCSE Science.  You can progress onto higher studies in Medicine, microbiology, pharmacy and other related subjects at university.

AS Religious Studies

Do this subject and you will get to learn about a range of different religions and beliefs and philosophical and ethical approach to religion. It is designed to develop an interest in and enthusiasm for a rigorous study of religion. To study this subject you are required to demonstrate a breadth and depth of knowledge about those areas studied, as well as to make connections, integrate ideas and develop concepts.  Through study of this subject you will also develop an understanding about the spiritual, moral, social and cultural education.  In year 1 you will be looking at religious studies from foundation, investigation and developments perspectives focusing on Islam as a major world religion.  No prior knowledge is required in the subject to do this course.

You can progress onto higher studies in Religion at universities in the UK.  Combined with other Arts and language subjects and you enter into a degree related to Arts and languages from a selection of courses and universities.

AS English Language & Literature

This subject opens up doors to unlimited career paths.  Widely regarded as highly academic subject where you read and analyse texts and learn how to do this professionally.  Your ability to communicate both verbally and in writing will be refined.  You should also find yourself much more articulate and assertive in forums of varying nature – whether it is in a group, formal or informal arrangements.

You will be introduced to advanced language study and the development of skills to write for different audiences and purposes.  You will understand use-related variations and the ability to use linguistic frameworks to analyse and interpret language building on the core variation concepts of audience, purpose, field and genre, adding the idea of mode.

In English literature depending on the topics adopted, you will closely look at a selection of poetry, prose and drama publications from classical and modern English literature.  You will develop a wide ranging understanding of writing in English and the social contexts that have influenced the writings and how it has affected the settings.  You can expect to obtain the skills of analysing and ability to construct and present a powerful argument from a critical perspective.

The skills to interpret, analyse and assess complex text are essential skills in almost all the professions – Journalism, law, accountancy, medicine, politics, mass communication and business.  So you will not be short of progression routes for your higher studies at university.
